Intrinsic and Extrinsic Motivation of Students of Constantine the Philosopher University in Nitra Regarding Study of Social Work


Abstract:

OBJECTIVES: The main objective of the research is to identify factors of intrinsic and extrinsic motivation of social work students and to find out how they evaluate their studies. THEORETICAL BASE: Motivation is the intrinsic process of a person related to his activity and role in society. Intrinsic motivation is based on one’s self interest and is also related to the need of self-realization. Extrinsic motivation is a driving force for the human being from the outside. METHODS: We used a self-constructed questionnaire containing 26 items describing potential motivation of social work students. OUTCOMES: Participants scored higher in intrinsic motivation. We found out that male students in comparison with female achieved statistically significantly lower scores in intrinsic motivation and statistically significantly higher scores in extrinsic motivation. Students also have had a statistically significant difference in the ratio of extrinsic and intrinsic motivation in a relation to the degree of the study. SOCIAL WORK IMPLICATIONS: The results represent the important findings in the field of education of social workers. The research can contribute to the innovation of study department and lead to a more qualified education. The results are also an implication for researched at other universities.
