Towards Seniors’ Social Network: Seniors in the Family

Abstract:

The article deals with seniors and their position in the primary social structure. Referring to a tendency towards verticalization of social relations in old age, the author focuses namely on the dyad of elderly parents alternatiand adult children. She bases it on the results of a research plan „Seniors in the Society. Strategies of preserving the personal autonomy“, realized with a specific „integrated“ methodology. She concludes: For most seniors, at least one child is geographically reachable, which they meet at least several times a month. Seniors distinguish the function of informal social relations, i.e. with their friends, neighbours, partners and children. In the concrete, children are an important source of emotional and cognitive support.
