Theoretical Basis for the Study of Self-Care and Risk Behaviour in Adolescents

Vladimir Lichner, Frantiska Petrikova, Eva Ziakova

Abstract

OBJECTIVES: The presentation deals with theoretical concepts of self-care in relation with risk behaviour in adolescents, mainly focusing on defining prevention. One of the aims is to present the methodological starting points in the form of an overview study. THEORETICAL BASE: The starting point is Bronfennbrener’s ecosystem theory, which is important in the study of self-care in adolescents. The theoretical basis rests on self-care in the context of other target groups. METHODS: There is a meta-analysis of the realized studies and subsequently a deductive approach that leads to the theoretical definitions of the preventive program. The theoretical overview of the researched issues resulted in a program proposal. OUTCOMES: The meta-analysis showed that the participation in the general interest or training programs, which were focused on self-care, increased self-interest. Based on this, self-care acts preventively serve to reduce risk behaviour. SOCIAL WORK IMPLICATIONS: We consider the contribution of these new methods of working with this target group to be significant. The expansion of the methods and procedures of working with adolescents in social work can expand the possibilities of solving problems associated with adolescence.
