Abstract
OBJECTIVES: In terms of the longer-term transformations of society (individualisation, migration, value pluralism, social and cultural diversity, the transformation of the family and childhood, social inequalities, etc.) as well as the current changes in Czech education (inclusive education), the article aims to revive the debate on the institutionalization of School social work (SSW). In doing so, the views of principals of basic schools and social work experts were compared. THEORETICAL BASIS: The delineation of SSW is discussed in connection to the changing education resulting from the socioeconomic processes of the postmodern period. METHODS: Quantitative data obtained through an exhaustive questionnaire focused on the principals of Czech basic schools were used (1763 completed questionnaires; response rate 43 %). OUTCOMES: Although social work experts associate a variety of positive effects with the institutionalisation of SSW, especially in the area of supporting schools in meeting their educational mission, most directors of schools tended to reject the idea of SSW. SOCIAL WORK IMPLICATIONS: The definition and institutionalization of Czech SSW should take place in close dialogue with the needs of the schools, and the existing organizational and institutional environment of education consultancy. Adequate methodological support and the elaboration of SSW university study programmes is necessary.
